Description
If a consumer does not think the debt is theirs, thinks that the amount is incorrect, or believes that there is some other type of error, the consumer can send the collector a dispute letter. Collectors make a lot of mistakes, and disputing the debt may help resolve the matter. Federal law requires debt collectors to provide “validation information” about the alleged debt and the consumer’s rights to dispute it. Other practice tools include other letters a consumer can send to a debt collector, including those instructing the collector to cease communications, a letter indicating all the consumer’s assets and income are exempt, and a letter seeking verification of the debt.
