Divya Subrahmanyam is a senior staff attorney with the Consumer Law Project at CAMBA Legal Services, Inc. (CLS), a community-based non-profit in Brooklyn, NY, that serves low-income New Yorkers facing a broad range of consumer law issues. Divya represents consumers in state consumer debt collection proceedings, assists with outstanding student loans, combats inaccurate credit reporting, advocates for victims of auto fraud, and engages in state and federal affirmative litigation addressing predatory lending and debt collection abuses.

Divya began at CLS as a fellow working to establish consumer legal services clinics at several CAMBA family homeless shelters.  Through these clinics, she screened residents for consumer law needs, and provided limited assistance and full representation in order to help residents improve their credit and their ability to access safe and stable housing.

Currently, Divya co-chairs the New York City Domestic Violence and Consumer Law Working Group, a collaboration between social and legal services providers that aims to address the urgent, unmet and often complicated economic and consumer debt-related issues facing domestic violence survivors. The Working Group engages in resource development, training, fact finding, and advocacy efforts, including the recent publication of a policy report entitled Denied! How Economic Abuse Perpetuates Homelessness for Domestic Violence Survivors. Divya also conducts trainings for advocates from an array of organizations on consumer law, domestic violence, and coerced debt. Divya received her J.D. from Harvard Law School and her B.A. in Linguistics from Yale College.
