Annie Smith

Annie Smith is a professor of law at the University of Arkansas School of Law where she directs the Civil Litigation & Advocacy Clinic and Human Trafficking Clinic. From 2019-2022, she also served as faculty director of the School of Law’s Public Service and Pro Bono Program. Professor Smith’s advocacy and scholarship focus on labor exploitation and enforcement of the rights of low-wage workers. She and her students have represented numerous clients in unpaid wage, forced labor and human trafficking, and other matters. Her articles have been published in the Washington Law Review, New York University Review of Law and Social Change, and South Carolina Law Review. Professor Smith received the Arkansas Bar Foundation's Best Legal Writing 2022 for her article, "Understanding Human Trafficking Laws and Liability" published in The Arkansas Lawyer. In 2021, Professor Smith received the inaugural School of Law Dean's Circle Faculty Award for Service. Professor Smith serves as the vice chair of the board of Legal Aid of Arkansas and, from 2012 through 2018, served on the board of the Northwest Arkansas Workers’ Justice Center. Professor Smith created the Arkansas Labor Trafficking Awareness Project and co- designed the human trafficking curriculum for the Arkansas Law Enforcement Training Academy. She is the former chair of the AALS Section on Poverty Law and a member of the section’s executive committee. Previously, Professor Smith served as a Friedman Fellow and interim director of the International Human Rights Clinic at The George Washington University Law School. She started her legal career at the Workers Legal Rights Project of Legal Services of New Jersey.
