1.12.1.4 State Student Loan Ombudsman or Advocate

Since 2015, twelve states have passed laws to strengthen the rights of student borrowers against their loan servicers.358 The consumer protections in these laws vary, ranging from strengthening borrowers’ rights and regulations enforceable by borrowers, to licensing requirements with state oversight and public enforcement mechanisms. As result of these laws, several states across the country have a designated student loan ombudsman or advocate. These state officials are a dedicated resource committed to providing information that is critical to many student loan borrowers.

NCLC’s Student Loan Borrower Assistance website (www.studentloanborrowerassistance.org) includes information about various state student loan ombudsman or advocate programs.
