When good faith permits, the consumer can deny a request for admission. Even if the statement is later proven to be true, the consumer is not liable for the collector’s expenses of proof if there were reasonable grounds for the consumer to deny the matter.32 The consumer need not win the case to avoid paying for the collector’s costs. For the particular statement requested, the consumer need only have reasonable grounds for believing that the statement is not true.
